This is true whether the referral problem is not completing assignments, having difficulties in reading, or being unable to quickly and accurately compute addition facts. Although learning to conduct systematic observations is not difficult, it does take some concentrated practice and effort to master the method.
It is a rare person if such a person exists who can put on a pair of skis for the first time and go schussing down the slopes of Killington. It is a rare person who can sit down at a piano for the first time and play popular songs. It is a rare person who can get in front of a group of third-grade children and teach subtraction with regrouping.
Attaining the skills to be a good skier, a good athlete, a good pianist, or a good teacher takes practice. This manual describes the rationale and process of direct observation. In particular, the use of the BOSS, a measure designed specifically for direct observation of academic skills, is presented.

Its main purpose is the numerical recording of behaviors occurring in the observational setting. If Jason is reported as not completing his work, than systematic observation may find that, on average, Jason completes only two of five in-class math assignments per day.
If Miguel is reported as fighting on the playground at recess, systematic observation may reveal that he was sent to the principal for fighting five times in the past 2 weeks.
In each case, the use of systematic observation is an attempt to capture the quantitative aspects of the behavior taking place. Unfortunately, although these subjective impressions are frequently accurate, they can also be inaccurate.
Such a report suggests that the behavior occurs frequently and should be easily observable. If asked to complete a rating scale that includes items about teasing, the teacher may report that the behavior occurs often, when, in reality, the behavior may occur rarely.
However, the fact that the behavior is viewed as negative and obnoxious by the teacher may make it seem much worse than it really is. Using a form of systematic observation makes it possible to describe the teasing or off-task occasions objectively, in terms of their frequency.
Of course, even a low frequency of misbehavior can be very troubling; teasing that occurs once per week may be viewed as out of line and needing to be stopped. However, knowing that the problem is not as severe as one first thought may be very important in deciding how to best perceive the problem.
Systematic observation of Jamie may reveal that she is actually off-task at the same rate as her peers. If that is the case, why does the teacher perceive her to have such a high frequency of inattentiveness? Using systematic observation one can report, in a more definitive way, the nature of the off-task behavior that has led the teacher to develop such a perception.
There are several important reasons for conducting systematic observations. First, as already noted, getting subjective opinions about behavior is important, because these perceptions represent how persons who deal with the problem experience it; indeed, they form the basis of what we think is going on.
However, subjective perceptions need to be systematically confirmed or disconfirmed. In addition, as suggested earlier, the problem may be either less or more severe than originally indicated. Thus, two important reasons for conducting systematic observation are the need to confirm or disconfirm subjective reports and to determine the exact severity of the reported problem.
A third important reason for conducting systematic observation is to provide a baseline or benchmark against which to assess the success or failure of an instruc- Direct Observation: Manual for the BOSS 37 tional intervention.
This comparison allows the teacher, the student, and the parents to see the gains or losses in performance that have occurred over time. It is also required in some states that such baseline data be obtained as part of the evaluation process.
A final reason to collect systematic observation data is to provide feedback to parties parents, students, teachers, and other school professionals regarding the types and levels of problems students are currently having.
